Ian Parlane died at Waikato Hospital on 12 August 1998. Ian was born in Palmerston North, the only son of Sydney and Ethel Parlane. His first employment after leaving school was with the Audit Department in Wellington, from 1942 to 1948. He saw war service with the New Zealand Army and the RNZAF, based in Fiji and Tonga, where he worked on the weather stations. He returned to Wellington for a short time, then went to Hawera where he was appointed assistant town clerk in 1948. In 1950 he married Molly Addenbrooke, in Stratford. Three years later he became town clerk at Foxton.
In 1955 Mr & Mrs Parlane arrived in Paeroa where Ian had been appointed as Paeroa Borough's town clerk, succeeding Mr Mathew Baker. By the time he retired he had become Paeroa's longest serving town clerk with 30 years in the position.
Ian was associated with many local organisations. He was a foundation member of the Paeroa Historical Society, writing a number of articles for the Journal, the first appearing in Journal 4, (1965). He also lead local walks for the Society.
In earlier years he was Chairman of the Paeroa College Board of Governors. He joined the Lions Club becoming foundation secretary in 1950 and he was also the bulletin editor for five years becoming Vice President for 1961/62 year and then President in the following year. He audited the club's books for 30 years. In 1993 he was awarded life membership of the club.
