Albert Reed built his home not far from the Tramway Hotel on Battery Flat, Karangahake. In 1897 he was granted a License for a Residence-Site to cover the area he occupied. The area was eight perches. A copy of the license has been reproduced on the opposite page. The reverse of the license contains the following endorsement:

This License is granted subject to the following:

1 That the said A Reed and his assigns will not at any time interfere with or build over any portion of the water race running through the section belonging to Algar Bunyard and will at all times permit the said A Bunyard, his servants and workmen to enter upon the said section to inspect or repair the said water-race.

2 That the licensee will not erect any building to interfere with or exclude the light from the storeroom belonging to A Bunyard, situated close to the Northeast boundary of ground under the license.

3 That the New Zealand Crown Mines Ltd shall at all times have free access on the said section for the purpose of repairing or altering the tramway and shall have the right to extend or widen their present tramway nine feet without any claim for compensation being made by the said Albert Reed and his assigns.
