"The Borough Welter"

Owing to the retirement of that good battler Expert, it was found necessary to find another to complete the Borough string.

Accordingly, two new aspirants for public favour tried conclusions over the Borough Course on Friday last. The contestants were:

Comrade, by Commerce - Theory

Precious Waters, by Dredger - River Scheme

When the contestants paraded prior to the start it was at once apparent that Comrade had come through a very searching preparation and looked well, while Precious Waters looked short of work and was carrying a good deal of superfluous condition. Despite the fact that he had been absent from the local track for some days, the latter finished up a slightly better favourite than Comrade, who by the way, is only a pony in stature.

Mr Furley despatched the pair promptly and Precious Waters showed the way over the Football Ground jumps and bad drains in Station Road. Coming along "Phillips Special" - road Comrade drew ahead with a slight lead, pulling hard.

Running through Taylors' Avenue they were together and there was no change in the run to the Septic Tank, but Precious Waters went into the lead again running up from the Junction to the old Railway Wharf. He gradually drew away here and it looked any odds on him winning, but a faulty jump at the Cyanide stack owing to a "wet" take off gave Comrade his chance and the pony gradually wore his bigger rival down and in a good finish won by a neck. There were many congratulations in the Steward's room after the race.
