John Frederick (Fred) Carbutt died at Waihi on 14 August 1998. He was born in Pitt Street, Auckland on 10 March 1907, the only son of Harry and Amelia Carbutt. Fred had five sisters, one born in Auckland and the others in Waihi. Fred moved to Waihi with his family in November 1911, where his father purchased a grocery business on the corner of Haszard and Kenny Streets, opposite the Court House.
After he left school in 1924 Fred followed his father in the grocery business for a time. He also drove buses, worked in the Martha Mine, delivered Rural Mail and worked for several businesses around Waihi. His last employment was with C C Dillimore & Co. for 17 years.
Fred was a member of the Waihi Historical Society, a Mason, a member of Rotary, a member of the Goldfield Railway Society and the Presbyterian Church, of which he was treasurer for many years. He served on the Waihi Fire Brigade for 37½ years and had served on the St. John's Ambulance for many years from 1932.
Fred married Dorothy Stamp in 1937 and they had three children, John, Ann and Joy. Dorothy died and later Fred married Muriel Jones who died in June 1994.
