OLD WAIHI

Older residents will recall the deep street side gutters which ran down the sides of Seddon Street and the water which in the earlier mining days was pumped down them. One miner who had imbibed rather generously at the Rob Roy Hotel later found the street heaving and falling under his feet like a ship in a storm. He stumbled and fell into the deep gutter with its rushing water. Dragged out of the torrent his first words were, "Never mind me, save the women and children."
