Travellers between Waihi and Paeroa will be familiar with the turn of the century house which stood between the river and road at Owharoa. One of the survivors of the Owharoa settlement, it was the home of the Walder family for many years. After the last tenants left it became vandalised and was demolished on 17 November 1995. The building had been deemed unsafe by the Hauraki District Council and a demolition order issued. (Judging by the holes which appeared in the wall on the Waihi side, the building had been known to "jump out" in front of passing vehicles from time to time.)
