OBITUARY : ALFRED ALEXANDER JENKINSON

The Paeroa Historical Society lost one of its foundation members with the death of Alf Jenkinson on 3 November 1995. He was born in Thames and moved with other members of his family to Rahu Road, Mackaytown, early in 1904. Alf started school at Mackaytown and later attended the Karangahake school and Thames High School. His first job was with Jack Hannah, a Paeroa solicitor, followed by a time with Marquis and Lamb, joiners. In June 1920 Alf was appointed assistant clerk to the Ohinemuri County Council. In February 1931 he was appointed County Clerk, a position he held until he retired in July 1964.

In 1932 Alf married Kitty Forbes. She died in 1974.

In his younger days Alf played cricket and rugby. He joined the Paeroa Rotary Club in 1946 and during his long association with this service club, held all offices. When the Ohinemuri County celebrated its 60th Jubilee Alf was responsible for compiling the book published at that time recording the history of the County.
