By Margaret Hunt (nee Currie)

During the early 1940's before the advent of the school bus our transport to school from Old Tauranga Road was by horse or on foot. One morning, Eleanor and I were ready for school on our old horse Piebald, when June Gardiner from next door called in to accompany us to school. Father decided there was room for three on the horse. Piebald thought otherwise and the next minute all three of us were on the ground bawling our eyes out. Later we had another horse, Tiny. After school one day the Tretheway boys whacked him on the rump. Tiny bolted and never stopped until he reached home, with Eleanor clinging on desperately!

We spent many hours on those rough roads of metal, often blackberrying as we dawdled home from school.
