MR. R.H. (Poly) [Roly ? – E] HILL writes:-
Soon after the opening of the Goldfield, my wife's father Charles Bunting, made his home for over a year in a hollow Kauri log at Waitekauri. A bush chimney was put in one end, a door at the other and the fitted wooden floor was roughly smoothed. C.B. was 5 ft. 11 ins, tall but he had head-clearance of 1 ft. and the walls were 2 ft. thick. He maintained that his "log room" was the most comfortable he ever lived in, being cool in summer, warm in winter and perfectly dry. The log must have been approximately 13 ft. in diameter.
(Note. Mr. and Mrs. Hill have lived for 60 years in their home in Cambridge where Mr. Hill did a tremendous amount of work in connection with the local Museum. We send our Greetings to this wonderful old couple.) Ed.
