QUEEN'S SERVICE MEDAL AWARD
CHARLIE TOWNSHEND
The Award of the Queen's Service Medal to Mr E J C (Charlie) Townshend was announced in the 1987 Queen's Birthday Honours List.
Mr Townshend spent 50 years with the Hauraki Association of the Rural Intermediate Credit Association, a forerunner of the Rural Bank, as valuer/director. He was a Director of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company from 1947-68 and on the board of the Auckland Farmers Freezing Company for eight years.
A farmer and an active supporter of Federated Farmers, he holds a "35 years Loyal Service Certificate". He also had an active interest in church, civic and community affairs.
Mr Townshend has been a J P for 44 years; has been involved for over 60 years with the Paeroa A and P Association being president for eight years and latterly, as Patron; has been associated with the Farmers Veterinary Club, Ngatea, which included 20 years on the Management Committee; is a life member of Paeroa Rotary, having been a member for some 30 years, and is a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge and almoner for 30 years. Mr Townshend was one of the founders of the former A & P, later the Ohinemuri Calf Club, and is its Patron; former President of the Paeroa Beautifying Soc., and was instrumental in the tree planting project on Taylors Ave., and the erection of the direction plinth on Primrose Hill.
The Society congratulates Mr Townshend on being awarded this Honour.
