At the beginning of this century the present Domain was a large paddock. The Council purchased the land and decided to make it into a Domain. A hedge was planted round the area and a bowling green was made & fenced in. Then trees from all parts of the world were planted. A Mr Hamilton was appointed caretaker. He started planting the trees about 1907. I was a small school girl and used to watch Mr Hamilton planting those trees. Mr Hamilton used to tell me that overseas visitors remarked on the beauty of those trees.
