A new $5 million sewage treatment plant was officially opened in Paeroa on Tuesday 5 March 2002. The Hauraki District Council purchased a thirty-nine-hectare farm property near Hubbard Road on which to build the plant. Construction commenced in January 2001 but the investigation for the plant started about six years previously. The plant will stop 100,000 cubic metres of untreated waste water going into the Ohinemuri River each year. After filtering, the waste water goes into a series of three aeration ponds and maturation ponds. Four aerators keep the water oxygenated. Suspended material is then removed through a 22,000 square-metre gravel filtration bed before being disinfected by an ultraviolet system and discharged into the river.
