It was a grey August afternoon in 1981, when five women from Hikutaia gathered in the Maratoto Valley to discuss the formation of a gardening club. Mesdames Maureen Smith, Juliet Wright, Meg Barden, Natalia Strange and Maureen McCollum were those residents.

Mrs Maureen McCollum was elected foundation Convenor and Mrs Maureen Smith foundation Secretary/Treasurer.

Twenty years on, the Circle gathered at the home of member Margaret Kennedy (the former owner of the Hikutaia Store), where they celebrated their 20th year of the Garden Circle. At this meeting Maureen McCollum was awarded Life Membership and former foundation Secretary Maureen Smith was presented with a 20-Year Plaque.

The Circle also awarded its Patron, George Kennedy with a memento.

The 2001/2002 Convenor is Mrs Phillipa Christie and the Secretary/Treasurer is Mrs Carole Harding.
