Reg and Irene Hughes Diamond Wedding
Ohinemuri Regional History Journal 44, September 2000

Long-time and untiring members of the Paeroa and District Historical Society, Reg and Irene Hughes, celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on Thursday 22 July 1999.

Reg and Irene met on 4 August 1932 on the dairy farm where they both worked at the height of the depression. They then went their separate ways, Reg to the Police College at Wellington, and Irene to domestic work in Auckland. Contact was maintained by letter and, seven years after their meeting, they were married at the Methodist Church in Paeroa on 22 July 1939. The reception was held at the Victoria Bakery, Paeroa, at a cost of 2/6 (25 cents) a head.

Their first home after their marriage was at Wanganui, followed by Hamilton. They then moved to Irene's parent's farm at Paeroa, where they have lived since. Reg farmed the property until four years ago.

To mark their Diamond Wedding Anniversary, Reg and Irene were guests of honour at a morning tea hosted by the Paeroa Historical Society Committee.
