Born near Stratford, Taranaki in 1910, Frank Young attended primary and secondary school in Stratford, afterwards becoming a pupil-teacher at Stratford Primary before attending Wellington Teachers' Training College. He excelled at athletics and was a Taranaki Rugby representative, being selected as an All Black triallist but did not play in this role.
After marrying in 1930, Mr & Mrs Young were sent to a remote school on the northern Coromandel Peninsula for two years, 1931-32. Their next move was to Dannevirke where Mr Young taught at Dannevirke South School (1933-47). It was here that their two sons, Irvine and Owen were born.
Mr Young served in the Home Guard during World War II (Service number 515865). From 1947 until 1958 Mr Young was on the staff of Te Aroha Primary School. He was also a Thames Valley Rugby referee and there were eight inter-provincial and four international matches between the years 1948-56.
Coming to Paeroa, Mr Young was the First Assistant at Paeroa Central School for ten years, following Mr Cyril Scott in this position. He served under Headmasters J P Callaghan and T H Barrett, retiring in December 1968. The Youngs lived in Nahum Street and Aorangi Road, and served the Presbyterian Church, being members of the Church Session whilst here.
Later they lived in Thames, then about 1990, moved to Cambridge to be nearer to their family. Mrs Young died in 1993 and Mr Young on 19 November 1997, aged 87.
