In March 1997 the Waihi Rugby Union celebrated its centenary with a number of activities. On Saturday, 22 March there was a street parade to the Kenny Street rugby grounds, where there were speeches, and acknowledgements of those who had given their services to the games. Several old timers who had played rugby more than 50 years ago were formally recognised. Following this there was a lunch and official cutting of the centennial cake and photographs taken. In the afternoon a feature match was played between a Waihi Invitation XV and a Thames Valley Goldfields Invitation XV side. On Saturday night more than 300 guests attended the centennial dinner held at the Waihi Beach Community Centre.
