PAEROA HISTORICAL SOCIETY ANNUAL REPORT
The President, Sam Orr, in reporting to the Society's Annual General Meeting, said that the past year had been an active one, with good attendances at meetings. Sunday afternoon meetings in winter had been a particular success. Mr Orr commented on the various activities during the year, a resume which is given below. Thanks were extended to members of the Society and especially to Committee members who had carried out their duties faithfully, contributing to the Society's success.

Waikato Historical Society hosted a meeting at Hockin House, Hamilton - "Meet the President" - Mr (and Mrs) Brian Astridge who spoke about the "Federation - practice the Rules" - 100-120 people present. The Federation was formed following an inaugural meeting in March 1971 - 45 Societies involved. In 1988 there are 75 Societies and 53 Associate Members. |

WAIHI HISTORICAL SOCIETY ANNUAL REPORT
The President, Mrs Margaret Wells, reported that monthly meetings had been well attended, with some interesting talks by various speakers.
It was with regret that the Society farewelled Mr and Mrs Bert McAra during the year when they left Waihi to live in Thames to be nearer their daughter. They were farewelled at a morning tea at the home of Mrs Wells who presented Mrs McAra with an azalea bush for their new home and Mr McAra with a photo of Waihi showing Union Hill.
Several members had attended a party organised by the Paeroa Historical Society for Mrs Nell Climie's 90th birthday. Mrs Wells presented Mrs Climie with a beautiful bouquet of flowers on behalf of the Waihi Society.
A number of field trips had been undertaken, when a bus was hired to convey members to the Kiwifruit Complex at Te Puke, Te Maori Exhibition and Microworld in Auckland and to the Glenbrook Vintage Railway and Waiuku Museum.
Members had welcomed the West Auckland Historical Society as well as the North Shore Historical Society during the year when they had both paid field trips to Waihi.
Waihi was now going through another very exciting mining era, Mrs Wells said. In June last year members had gone to the Mining Company's public relations office to see the video on present mining operations.
A number of items of interest were displayed at the November meeting which made an interesting talking point. A very enjoyable social hour was spent with morning tea being served, complemented with a beautifully iced Christmas cake.
WAIHI ARTS CENTRE & MUSEUM
A painting competition during July was held at the Waihi Arts Centre & Museum to celebrate the 25th Jubilee of the opening of the Association. The open competition attracted 55 entries from many parts of the North Island.
Over 100 people attended the official opening of the exhibition on Sunday, July 10 when the winners received a total of $3,900 in sponsored prize money. First prize of $2,000 went to Mrs. Sue Aagaard Norton for her oil painting entitled "Sculptured Light". The Judge was Mrs. Nicki Van Der Meijden of Auckland who made very favourable comment on the museum improvements since she was in Waihi 25 years ago.
Also present was Mrs. Eric Lee-Johnson whose husband had played a leading part in the establishment of the Arts Centre & Museum when the Manual Training School became vacant. Mr. Lee-Johnson was unable to be present at the function.

CORRECTION
In last year's Journal, an error was made in the OBITUARY for the late J A MILROY.
The incorrect paragraph stated:-
"He married Alma Power in December 1935 and theyhadthree children, Graeme, Glenice and Mary. Alma died in 1957. He later remarried in 1968 to Claudia Clarke."
This paragraph should have been as follows:-
"He married Alma Power in December 1935, who sadly died in 1957. He remarried in 1968 to Claudia Clarke. There are three children, Graeme, Glenice and Mary."
