WAIHI HISTORICAL SOCIETY

ANNUAL REPORT

Mrs D. Heath presented her report stating that once again it had been a quiet year for the Society.

Two bus trips had been held during the year - one to Auckland where members visited Alberton and Ewelme. The other trip was to Tauranga where the group visited the Elms and the Tauranga Historical Society's pioneer village. The visit to the Elms coincided with its annual meeting which was held in the cottage.

Several members had spent many hours in the Playcentre building during the winter tidying up the papers collected from Mr Clem Callaghan's Printing business when it closed down. Mesdames D. Heath, B. McAra, C. Harper and Mr C. O'Dell sorted through many duplications of old posters, wedding invitations and printing orders which had been meticulously filed away by Mr Callaghan during his many years as the town's printer.

Honorary Life Membership of the Society was conferred on Mr and Mrs Bert McAra in recognition of their work on the book 'Goldmining at Waihi' - Mr McAra for his Painstaking labour in research, writing and proofing the book, and Mrs McAra for her encouragement, assistance and patience while he was engaged on the work.
