The New Year Honours 1970 were momentous for Ohinemuri and particularly for the Paeroa Historical Society and the Waihi Historical Society.
The well deserved award of the B.E.M. to Mrs. Nell Climie by Her Majesty sent a glow of pride and satisfaction through all the people who have in any way been connected with Mrs. Climie or with the work she has done for the district.
Graciousness personified, she accepted both her honour and the congratulations that followed humbly, never forgetting to remind the congratulators that she was only a representative of a large group, and thus it was really the group that was being honoured, not herself as a person. Be that as it may, those who know how unstintingly she has given of herself, often at times when she felt little like it, know that the recognition of her efforts is truly deserved.
The daughter of an Ohinemuri pioneer family, who rose to heights in the educational world, Mrs. Nell Climie has returned to her birthplace, not to retire in the sense of leisured idleness, but to put on record for posterity the life and times of our forbears a task of Herculean size which she not only attempted but has succeeded in doing.
Thus, it is fitting that the Journal which Mrs. Climie created should offer special congratulations to her from all members who have had so much pleasure and interest through the two Societies whose instigator she was.
