Descendents of David Leach (once so well known in Karangahake and Paeroa) and of his brother Archie (of Waihi) held a Family Re-union at the Karangahake Picnic Area on February 26th 1977. Bill Leach writes:-
"It was a particularly happy gathering and we found it deeply satisfying to be back in the scenes of our early days. The climb to the summit of the mountain was also a rewarding experience. Frances surprised us by reaching the spur just beside the final section leading to the Trig itself. The view was magnificent, and for me, on my first climb, it was a great surprise to find that we could see the whole of Waihi, Mayor Island, and the Firth of Thames".
