The Governor-General, Sir Keith Holyoake will be present in Waihi for the centenary celebrations in October to mark the first discovery of gold here. Sir Keith has accepted the invitation extended by the Waihi Borough Council to be here during one of the seven days of celebrations.
A wide programme of events is being arranged to celebrate the discovery made by the early prospectors, John McCombie and Robert Lee, which led to the beginning of the famed Martha Mine and the township itself.
An invitation to take part in the celebrations has been accepted by Sir Keith and Lady Holyoake, and the Governor-General's official secretary, Mr James Brown has replied on their behalf.
"Their Excellencies are interested in attending and accordingly I have pencilled in the dates 16-23 October, and await further information from you as to the detailed dates and the specific events during that week," the Town Clerk, Mr P.G. Whelan, was advised.
"A little nearer the time and with this information in hand, we can make the necessary detailed arrangement for their Excellencies' visit," the secretary wrote.
