A former Mayor of Waihi died last year, mourned by many friends. He had given the town one of its greatest boosts after the mining industry ended in the 50's. At the age of 21 he emigrated from Denmark in 1920 and in Waihi worked as a bushman with his brother Niels before taking up dairy farming. Later be established the Mataora Timber Mill in Consols Street and was a member of the O.C. Council from 1938 - 1951. He served as a Waihi Borough Cr. from 1953 - 1956 and as Mayor from then until 1965. The town was at a very low ebb as it had been financed almost completely by gold duty and revenue. Loans were inevitable and Mr. Christiansen was a strong leader of his progressive Council. He bore himself with great dignity to his office and his town where many improvements were initiated.
