From Mining news in Thames Advertiser 29/1/85 [1885 – E].
"Sutro - Karangahake. This claim is situated south of and adjoining the Golden Crown and is located on the same line of reef. Prospecting operations are now in progress under the supervision of the owner Mr. Alf. Shepherd who has already spent a considerable amount of time and money in the district and it is hoped that his new venture will amply reward his faith and perseverance".

6/4/1906. Latest assays from the north drive Waihi Beach Mine as follows:
128½ ft. from main cross-cut 16/2d a ton; 131 ft. £1/7/2d a ton; 133½ ft. 16/2d a ton; 136 ft£1/1/2d a ton; 138½ ft. £1/1/4d a ton. The Mine Manager reports under date April 2 that the drive north on the reef is now in 187 ft. from the main crosscut. Reef improving in value as the drive extends north.
A handwritten letter headed Paeroa, 30/5/1895, gives an idea of old [monetary - E] values:-
"I, Alfred Cole, of Komata, Flaxmiller, hereby offer to sell to Pierce Lanigan of Auckland, Contractor, all my land containing 70 acres situated at Komata bounded towards the south by the Komata Creek and on the West by the main Thames Road together with Flaxmill thereon known as the Komata. Flaxmill and also Water right and Race to carry 10 head used in connection with the said Mill and also all houses, machinery and plant now on the said land for the sum of £700. This offer to remain open for acceptance for 3 weeks from the above date". A. Cole.
