A fit and alert 85 year old, came to Waihi in 1901 from the Mines Trust Company in Auckland and worked in the Martha Gold Mining Company's office for the next 10 years, returned recently after a long absence. During his early sojourn he organised the first St. John Ambulance classes, mostly because there was as yet no hospital, and patients had to make the long wearisome journey to Thames. Mr. Clarke spent a lengthy period as Secretary-Treasurer of the School of Mines, but in 1912 left Waihi to take up an accountant's position with Lambourne's of Ponsonby, and later with a large engineering concern. Retiring at 60 he has been active in a variety of spheres especially in helping his son who established the well known firm, "Clarke's Cycle Works". Among thosetowelcome Mr. Clarke was his nephew, Mr. Allan Dean of Waihi.
