MR. ALEX CAMPBELL J.P. (2/4/73)
A member of a pioneer family the Late Mr. C. took over from his father a block of land above Waikino township and developed it into a highly productive dairy unit, now managed by his son John. He followed Mr. Blackmore as President of the Farmers Union (now Fed. Farmers) and was a member of the Auck. Exec. During War years he served with the Prim. Production Council and petrol rationing committee, and was an advisory member of Calf Pools and Pig Marketing Assoc. Years were spent on the Waikinos Domain Bd. and as Chairman of the Waikino and Hall Committee and the Waihi Bobby Calf Pool.
When the old Waikino Hall was destroyed by fire Mr. Campbell was the moving spirit behind the erection of the new one, largely by vol. labour. He was a keen sportsman (Rugby, Cricket and laterly Bowls) and also a member of the M.U.I. Order of Oddfellows and the Masonic Lodge.
Elected to the Ohinemuri County Council in 1953 at the time of the closing of the Waikino Battery when development was needed in his area, Mr. Campbell set about the task with vigour and enthusiasm doing much for his riding. In 1957 he was elected Deputy-Chairman serving under Mr. H.R. Morrison until his death in 1970, when he took over leadership.
He is survived by his wife and 6 children, (3 boys and 3 girls) and 14 grandchildren.
