Tramway to Victoria Battery - The Rake

Mangatoetoe rail overbridge. 2005

Mangatoetoe rail overbridge. The Main Trunk railway line crossed over the top of this structure, WGM Company rakeline passed through the tunnel like interior (centre of picture). 2005. Compare with image of c.1925.

Standing on the Waihi end abutment of Black Bridge, looking downstream over the Ohinemuri River as it ponds behind the Masonry dam (right of picture). Just to the right of the pine tree trunk at top left of picture can be seen the cutting of the tramway, and directly in front of that, at the edge of the riverbank, is a hint of the other bridge abutment. 2000.

Tramway formation on battery side of Black Bridge, which was beyond the cutting, to the right of the tall pine tree. Tramway sweeps from left to right on its way to the battery. Note the small cutting at left of picture (with dark shade), and the small embankment across the small gully at centre 2004.

Recent flood damage at tramway bridge abutment. 2006

Recent flood damage at tramway bridge abutment, just downstream from McKinney Road. The two masonry wings can be seen, the left one on the slip face, the right hand one in the river. Remains of timber bridge piles exist also. A bent bolt protrudes from the near bank at bottom left. 2006.

Looking downstream, approaching

Looking downstream, approaching "the halfway", the tramway formation is the bench on the right, the water race remains are the higher bench. The top of the cascades on the Ohinemuri River is visible at extreme right. 2006.

Looking downstream to

Looking downstream to "the halfway", the flat pasture area at top. The tramway formation extends from mid right across the flat pasture to top centre. The water race remains is the higher bench to left of picture. Extreme top left is where the boiler feed water race terminated. A pipe took the water across the water race and on to a tank-stand beside the tramway. 2006.

The water race is the ditch at the right of the picture. 2004.

Still on the Orchard farm, but now further downstream, and looking upstream. The water race is the ditch at the right of the picture. The Rakeline can be identified as the narrow flat area running from bottom left to the water trough middle distance. The water race is by now several metres higher than the tramway, and crosses over it approximately 150 metres downstream from this photo location. 2004.

Standing on the tramway formation. 2004

Standing on the tramway formation, we are looking downstream (towards the battery) at a similar spot to the above image. The tramway enters a cutting at the centre of the picture. The water race is behind the bank at the top left of the picture. It crosses over the tramway 100m from this spot. 2004.

This concrete culvert is the remains of a small bridge on the tramway, between the two major cuttings. The tramway embankment is clearly visible. Towards the battery is left to right. 2006.

Looking upstream, the deep tramway cutting is below the pine trees centre top of picture. 2006

Looking upstream, the deep tramway cutting is below the pine trees centre top of picture. The tramway runs toward bottom right, crossing the culvert/bridge of the previous image, and the sweeps to the left, out of picture at bottom. The in-ground water race terminates in the dead gorse, centre left, and crossed the Ohinemuri in a flume bridge extreme left. Some timber foundations remain. 2006.

Tramway cutting where the lower water race flume bridge crossed over the tramway. 2006

Looking uphill (to Waihi) at the tramway cutting where the lower water race flume bridge crossed over the tramway. The bridge would have appeared at the very top of the picture, water flowing from left to right. A timber from this structure is visible top right of picture. 2006.

Water race, rake and bridge

This photograph is from the true right bank of the Ohinemuri; the river is flowing from left to right below the bank at the bottom of the picture. The dark cutting in the centre of the picture is the tramway. The straight line between the pasture and the bush, upper right of image, is the water race, just after it has crossed over the tramway. The Hawthorn bushes, mid left, indicate the position of the water race bridge. It brought the race back to the true left bank of the Ohinemuri, and continued over the tramway cutting so that the tramway could pass beneath it. 2004.

Downstream from the photograph above, the Ohinemuri is behind us. The water race is visible in the middle distance. A little lower down, at the base of the slope, the tramway passed. The water trough is roughly on the tramway. Down hill and down stream is left to right. 2004.

Water lying on top of the tailings near the Victoria Battery. The tramway formation is at top right, and beyond, and the Ohinemuri River is beyond that. The bank rising up to the water race is top left of picture. 2004.
